Installation Help for Microsoft Project Server 2010 BETA
30 November 2009msProjectExperts releases installation sample chapters for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft Project Server 2010 BETA versions as free community download.
New York, NY December 3, 2009 – Today, Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta users get an implementation boost from msProjectExperts, which released Beta versions of the installation modules from Implementing and Administering Microsoft Project Server 2010 for free download. The modules cover both Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 installation and Microsoft Project Server 2010 installation and basic configuration.
"We’re making the modules available as a free download as part of our continuing commitment to the Microsoft Communities," said Gary Chefetz, Microsoft Project MVP, co-author of Implementing and Administering Microsoft Project Server 2010, and founder of msProjectExperts. "Microsoft’s documentation is understandably sparse when new beta software releases, so we want to provide early beta adopters with an alternative that adds depth and value to the initial installation experience," said Chefetz. The download is available on the company’s website: http://www.msprojectexperts.com/betainstall.
The sample modules from Implementing and Administering Microsoft Project Server 2010 contain fully-illustrated in-depth installation instructions to guide first-time Microsoft Project Server 2010 users with a visual reference to verify that they are on the correct path when installing the software. The authors, including Dale Howard who is also a Microsoft Project MVP, provide insights into the various software components, explaining what they are and how they contribute to the SharePoint Server 2010 and Project Server 2010 environments. "Where Microsoft provides a dozen or so pages to get you through an installation, these modules dig deeper with more than 110 pages that help you understand the big-picture environment rather than simply providing only the barest steps," Chefetz added.
The modules include descriptive introductions to the various software components and service applications that comprise the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 environment and that are leveraged by Microsoft Project Server 2010 to build a complete EPM solution. The authors include copious notations as well as warnings about bugs and "gotchas," along with best practices for installing and configuring the SharePoint and Project Server beta versions. People who download the sample chapters are automatically invited to participate in the private pre-publication book sale that msProjectExperts conducts 30 days prior to ship date.

Starting a New Microsoft User Group or Community – Guidelines and Links
29 November 2009Few days back a friend of mind asked me about how I was able to create the Riyadh SharePoint User Group. So my answer was not simple. Creating User Group or technical groups is not easy step. It requires lot of time and resources to find people who are interested in working with you as volunteers and successfully creating a trust in your group members minds. But once everything is up and running the result is great. So while answering the question I was able to note down the things and resources to get help from. It is given below.
- Name the User Group and define your scope, objectives and target audience.
- Get Volunteer/Community Geeks on board – You need to define a Board build a relationship between the volunteers who are interested to be part of such a group and designate positions and responsibilities.
- Distribute Roles according to Skills and availability
- Create Check Lists of Tasks
- Design Group Logo and Moto
- Try to find a Local Microsoft Community Lead or MVP to guide you and present you some contacts.
- Do board meeting in the early weeks to discuss user group topics and vision for 6 months at least.
- Create a Facebook/Online Group Site and publish your Group with basic introduction to get peoples interest and on-board.
- Start online discussions and sharing information e.g. videos, blogs, links etc. using YouTube or your personal blog sites.
- Register your user group to INETA, GITCA and UGSS (Links Given Below), SQL Pass, ISPA or any other type of organization related to your UG.
- UGSS provides around a good amount as financial support and link to lot of community events including community members site which helps to user groups to do offline events.
- This will also provide you’re a free SharePoint Based Web Site as your website placeholder on the internet to upload and manage group information other than Facebook
- Create a Signup page on this site to get people register for the event.
- Try to arrange some sponsors for your community e.g. Top IT Companies or top IT companies or contact Local Microsoft Office to arrange giveaways and MS Marketing/Reading Material.
- Prepare for Offline event or user group meeting. Define period of meetings like monthly or bi-monthly.
- Create account at www.eventbrite.com to manage your Event invitations and events (e.g. http://rcsoctober.eventbrite.com).
- Take pictures during the board meetings and events and publish the agenda and outcome of the meeting on the group website.
- Create a YouTube Channel to upload video, trainings and interviews. SharePoint Hosting is very expensive to upload this stuff. User Facebook Group pictures to upload pictures.
- Try to contact Local MS Developer Evangelist to get Official MS Support for taking your UG to next level.
- Link your groups with publishing groups like SAMS, ORiely (sorry if misspelled), etc to get free books for your community and discounts for your members.
- Once your user group has done something send some information to MicrosoftFeed (Facebook Group). The reach of this group is deep inside Microsoft)

ke a long list of things but as I told you earlier UG creation is a long process. What I have described above is what I have leant myself but If you think that we should add more thing please do let me know or post as comment. I am sure this will add more value.
One last thing this procedure applies anywhere in the world

Early Project 2010 Feedback and Issues
27 November 2009It’s been great to see how many people have downloaded the Project 2010 Beta so far! Keep the feedback coming in the forums and through Send a Smile. I wanted to post to clarify a few of the most common issues people have been hitting so far.
Connecting Project 2010 client to Project 2007 Server – This is not supported. Project 2010 client can only connect to Project 2010 Server. You can connect the Project 2007 client to a Project 2010 server if the server is running in Compatibility Mode.
Unable to connect Project 2007 client to a 2007 server after installing Project 2010 client – This is an issue in the Beta. To fix this issue, go to the Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and repair your installation of Project 2007.
Where is the Pert Add-in – This was removed from Project. Brian Kennemer has blogged about a macro he wrote to replace this functionality. Check that post out here.
Where is Copy Picture – It is on the Home tab – Copy dropdown. ![]()
Remember, if you are using Send a Smile, please include your email address and put the text “Project” in your comments. This way we can find your feedback and follow up.

Should A Project Manager Have A Duck?
25 November 2009If you are convinced communication in projects is essential,
if you believe motivated people are good for a project,
if you think that being able to “see” someone else’s point of view improves respect and communication,
if you have a feeling that there must be something useful for you in “other” approaches and techniques…
… welcome to my blog.
Sorry, I don’t have Final Answers. We are discussing People. Difficult.
Even worse. I am trying to train/explain People About People.
After 30 months on the blog, I found that explaining “The Thing That A Project Manager Does To Move His Project In The Proper Direction, Related To People“ is mostly about creating stories and pictures, methaphores and small models. It’s the kind of information that sticks.
And now the purpose of this post.
A couple of weeks ago I talked about Leaders And Followers:
“For example, a couple of years ago a blog about Project Management was almost alone in its category. You could have quite a following with your blog. As more and more blogs come into existence about this topic, it gets harder and harder to build up your audience. Lot of leaders and not enough followers. An imbalance between supply and demand of information. … In the case of Project Management blogs, you are trying to differentiate yourself. Looking for a different or more specific niche. Change the medium by adding video, audio and presentations. Looking for your fresh, Blue Ocean.”
That’s true. But. There is also another, but similar, way of looking at this.
By my choice of topics, choice of words and use of images I am automatically selecting my Blue Ocean. By basically being me, people opt in or opt out.
Havi Brooks has duck, called Selma. She also has a terrific blog called Fluent Self.
She explains:
“I have a duck. I am a biggified blah blah expert whose business partner is a duck.
People who get it and think it’s cool are totally in.
People who think it’s stupid, or suspect that she’s — ewwwwwwwwwww — some kind of marketing ploy, are out. But not because I have to ask them to leave or anything. They just self-select out. They don’t stick.
Having red-velvet-rope Selma around (and let’s be honest, I don’t do anything without her) turns out to be a great way to help people find their way in or out.”
It’s this whole labeling and group affiliation thing again.
But only now you are creating your own group and the labels that are associated with it.
If you missed the whole labeling thing:
“We radiate to the outside world our icons like Gantt Charts, two-digits precise risk assessments, large documents that seems to cover every little aspect imaginable. If you are a member of our group, you ooze control. I once told my wife that I was “unable to comply to her request”. She smacked me on the head telling me that she was not my customer. So, I assume that we also have a specific language that sets us apart from other mortals. By adopting our symbols, our rituals and speak newbie PMs try to affiliate themselves with the group called Professional Project Managers.
As an identity is how we see ourselves within the ultimate large group of humans, it not something that is to be seen an an individual level, it is a group thing. Without groups, the whole concept of identity wouldn’t make sense. We are shaping identities by combining three mechanisms: categorization, identification and comparison. Although broadminded people like to think they do not put everyone in boxes, everyone does. We always put people in categories, we label them. This is done by looking for signs that we associate with a certain group. These signs are the mentioned use of icons, rituals or speak. To be able to associate yourself with a group, we first have to divide society into groups. Identification is the part where you affiliate yourself with a group.”
So, the purpose of the opening of this post…
To select the people that can use the information or can contribute to the discussion.
To make sure you know I have no Final Answers. I can lead the search though. I can offer you a home for your own search.
Although, I think just walking around with a duck is easier. Less work.
